How We Review

Every recommendation on CoffeeMakerLab is built on research, not hype. This page explains where our information comes from, how we pick products, and how the CML Score is calculated, including its limits.

What we do not do

We do not put products through physical trials in a lab or at home, and we never claim otherwise. Our verdicts are a careful synthesis of evidence that other people have published. When a claim depends on measurements we cannot verify, we either attribute it or leave it out.

Our process

  1. Define what matters. For each category we set the criteria first. For a drip coffee maker that might be brewing temperature, carafe type, capacity, and ease of cleaning. For a grinder it might be burr type, grind consistency, and range from espresso to French press.
  2. Gather the contenders. We pull current product data, including prices and images, from Amazon through its official Product Advertising API. If an article targets a price range, such as “under $100,” we only include products whose listed price falls inside that range.
  3. Research each product. We read the published specifications, compare how independent expert publications assess the product, and look at patterns in verified owner ratings.
  4. Score and rank. We assign each product a CML Score (explained below) and rank the list by that score.
  5. Edit before publishing. We use software tools, including AI models, to help gather and summarize research and to prepare first drafts. An editor reviews every article and checks specifications and model names against their sources before it goes live.

The CML Score

The CML Score is our rating from 0 to 10, shown with one decimal. It is relative: it tells you how a product compares with the other options in the same article, at the time of our research.

How a score is set. For products we have researched in depth, the score reflects three things: how strongly independent expert reviewers support the product, its feature set for the category, and its value for the price. Brand reputation and star rating alone do not decide it. Within one article, the products we consider the clear category leaders land between 8.8 and 9.4, strong picks land between 8.0 and 8.7, solid but unremarkable options land between 7.0 and 7.9, and products the expert consensus criticizes or ignores land between 6.2 and 6.9.

Provisional scores. A product we have not yet researched in depth gets a provisional score based only on its average owner rating. An average of 3.0 stars maps to 6.2, 5.0 stars maps to 9.4, and ratings in between scale evenly. For example, 4.5 stars becomes 8.6. We replace a provisional score once we complete the research.

Range. Scores on CoffeeMakerLab run from 6.2 to 9.4. We do not award a perfect score, because no product suits everyone.

Labels. Product cards may show a short label next to the score: 9.0 and above is Very Good, 8.0 to 8.9 is Good, 7.0 to 7.9 is Fair, and below 7.0 is Average.

How we choose top picks

  • Top Pick: the product with the highest CML Score among those currently available.
  • Budget Pick: the least expensive product that still meets our quality bar (a score of 6.0 or higher, or an average owner rating of at least 4 stars) and costs less than the Top Pick.
  • Upgrade Pick: a product priced at least 25 percent above the Top Pick that offers meaningfully more. If nothing qualifies, we leave this pick out rather than force one.

Keeping recommendations current

Prices and availability change daily, so we refresh product data regularly and show the date of the last update next to each price. Scores can change when new competitors arrive or new evidence appears. Every article shows when it was last updated.
